Excimer Laser behavior

As I mentioned in many others opportunities, there is so much interesting information on the internet about LASIK surgery, and so don’t be surprised if on your research you end crashing in one of the websites (against) refractive surgery. After all, thanks to them today there is a deeper investigation of side effects and complications about this procedure. But in this post there is not intend to discredit the information they provide, actually we want to emphasize something that many of them have in common which I don’t think that it is appropriate.

While some websites are posting information about the damage that (Excimer laser) could created in the cornea when the pulses occur doing the treatment, actually to my surprise, one of them published about a possible damage in the retina, something that after all if you think about it could be not to far from a possibility. But that is not the point that I want to highlight, actually many of them don’t have such as content information in their websites, instead are showing explicit graphs with an eye burning or smoke coming out of it.

I am wondering if this websites create somehow an impact or can be influential in the understanding behavior of a person? What do you think?

Anyways the next video was made by us in order to prove the Excimer Laser behavior on a small skin fissure, as was shown to us in our training, many years ago. We need to clarify that this video was made for educational purposes only and we can not compare corneal tissue density with skin density, however after the test, there is none evidence of skin burns.

Please make you comments!

What do you mean Free LASIK surgery?

Believe or not, today! a few surgeon are giving away a LASIK surgery for free, that’s right for free, but if you are wondering what is behind all this or how could this be possible these days, when other surgeons are charging up to $5.000 for the procedure. Well let me tell you that it is possible in a market that is getting more competitive every day.

This seems to be a new (Frans R) LASIK marketing strategy, and the way that it woks is very simple, but before I explain this let me clarify that I will use only examples figures in order to protect others budget information. Keep in mind that the only real price giving will be the price for the surgery witch is $1.800 for both eyes (the national average price for traditional surgery).

Let’s say for instances that we spend $800 on advertisement in one local radio station every month, and our conversion rate is no more than 2 to 5 phone calls from this media, if you are thinking that is not worth it, think again, because if we perform surgery in just one of these patients we are making profit, not much but still.
So based on this information our next question was how we could know if money or our price is an obstacle for people? and what is a fair price for them? With all these questions we start our free LASIK surgery campaign on the same local radio station, offering the procedure to all those who were interested on participate in a “raffle”. Obviously we gave a registration form in order to obtain additional information about the potential patient. The response was immediate, more than 15 calls in the first week and the rest of it is history.

If you are wondering about the results, we did 7 surgeries on top of our monthly average.
Why is that, because we did the free screening to every body in order to determinate if they are good candidates but also we provide all our payment options, so despite that only one person got the surgery, after all we still having phone call because people spread the word about us.

Let’s put a good end to this article and say that the only request that we ask to the person who won the surgery was his/her testimonial, in order to use it in other marketing campaign or even to published in our website.
Please more than welcome to make your comments and is always good to have you in our blog.
Thank you

The three reasons why patients do not have Lasik surgery

Today’s not news that the economy remains strong influence on the decision of many people who want refractive surgery these days, and for many medical practices facing these challenging times has not been easy, leading doctors be very careful in selecting the appropriate advertising medium. Many of them have significantly reduced their budgets on marketing and focus on creating new strategies of conservative and more effective way in order to sustain the costs involved in practicing refractive surgery (LASIK).

But as the market becomes more competitive, demand becomes increasingly scarce, and these circumstances, gives the perfect environment to manifest new opportunities for others, making this market mutate or evolve constantly. This development goes unnoticed by most consumers, if not to all of them. But while LASIK is still an intriguing issue to many, for others it may be just a key word that provide some profit, even those who have no connection with the issue rather than a Web site, can certainly generate some money with advertising.

As many say, (the money is not everything) and I must say that I agree with this saying, as I see it in practice very often in my work. While money is a key word in deciding whether I can afford to have the surgery, is not the only one who dismisses the patient to have this procedure, because two additional factors are attributed to this game, and these are; (Be candidate and sign the consent-form).

We don’t have to enquire into (being a candidate) because we all know that there is a preliminary evaluation to determine if the patient is a candidate or not, and just after this evaluation (LASIK-Workup) will eventually be ready to proceed with surgery, as long as the patient is a candidate according to the medical determination.
However, I must contribute to the following advice to other professionals in order to avoid misunderstandings between patients and physicians.
When doctors determinate and notifies the patient whether or not is a candidate, should never be used phrases such as, (good candidate, bad candidate, perfect candidate or not very good candidate). The proper way to say it will be (you are a candidate or you’re not a candidate period) and I have to mention this example because I have seen claims of patients to doctors for saying that phrase in the (LASIK-Workup), especially when the results were not satisfactory for the patient.
And finally (the surgical consent form) We have always had a lower percentage of total patients who do not end up doing the surgery for one of these three reasons (money, no candidate and disagree with the surgical consent.) To our amazement one of our latest statistics showed that in a particular month, 3 of 27 patients did not want to proceed with surgery because of what it says on the paragraphs of the consent form, which it somehow caught our attention because we had never exceeded certain percentages.
Whereas many of these consents can be found on various Web pages ophthalmologic entities, we are surprised to see in our collection of those, there is great similarity in some paragraphs. But before publishing this article we have compiled a couple of these, in order to find something in common to ours and obtain additional information and see what can be done about it. As a result, was that of the seven consents to descend on the Web in different LASIK practitioners, 7 have a 90% similarity, without the same content, but taking the same approach.

My question is, does any of you know what to expect in the consent form?

LASIK Consultations

Today, we have decided to start sharing our LASIK consultations and post additional content in our blog every time that we have one, with those who are willing to learn more about LASIK surgery and about the common behavior of many patients during the consultation.

Will be nice to have additional comments and questions from our readers.

Well let’s warm up our information, starting with what we do in a routine LASIK consultation, that way I do not have to explain same thing over and over again.  But first of all, a brief description of our current scenario.

Our practice is located in a small town, or seems to be small when you have other five practices offering same service (LASIK), so as you can imagine we really have to stand out with good marketing if we want to perform the procedure. Having said that, we have ads in different media (radio, Internet, magazines among others).

Well need to be constantly looking for ways to attract patients. But let’s bypass the marketing part and let’s get focus on the consultations.

As soon as we  received a phone call about LASIK, I personally want to take it  because with the years of experience that I have, I can determine right away if the patient is really interested or not.

I know what you are thinking, what do I mean if they are (really interested or not) if they are calling us. Well you would be surprised if I tell you that many patients today! Can call for a free LASIK consultation or screening because they believe that is a free eye exam.

Anyway, our Free LASIK consultation it’s basically (a refraction, topography, keratometry) and obviously health review and answer all the question of the patient.

I’m not a LASIK candidate. Now what to do?

So many people are tired wearing contact lenses or glasses every day, and many of them have been thinking about LASIK surgery as a solution for a long time,  but for one or other reason they have been postponing their consultation.

What happen if you go to your LASIK consultantion and found out that you are not a good candidate.

Now what to do?

What is your story with LASIK surgery?

Many patients and surgeons have experienced with LASIK surgery… exchange yours LASIK story with others!

What is Wavefront LASIK

Wavefront guided Laser Vision Correction technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Using this technology, doctors can detect and measure the optical distortions unique to the entire optical system of your eye. Light travels in a procession of flat sheets known as wavefronts. Gentle wavefront lights enter the eye, pass through the entire optical system (cornea, lens and retina) and are then reflected back into the wavefront analyzer.

The wavefront analyzer compares the reflected wavefront with the original unaltered wavefronts. This produces a fingerprint of your vision. This information is then transferred to the excimer laser and is used as a guide to reshape the cornea during the laser vision treatment.
